Georgian troops fire at refugees
Authorities in South Ossetia say Georgian troops have shelled the road being used for evacuating people from the conflict zone, according to Russian Interfax news agency. Attacks are continuing in the South Ossetian region, despite claims from Georgia that it was imposing a ceasefire. There have been several explosions in the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, after it came under a renewed shelling attack. Several Russian troops have been wounded.
A convoy of aid from Russia was attacked as it made its way to the ruined city of Tskhinvali.
Despite this, humanitarian supplies are arriving in the war-torn capital.
And the constant tide of people from the devastated areas of South Ossetia keeps flowing to Russia.
With a humanitarian corridor opened on Monday, thousands of evacuees have fled the conflict zone and sheltered in refugee camps in North Ossetia.
Meanwhile, Tskhinvali is back under peacekeepers' control, after Russian troops disarmed Georgians remaining in the city.
Moscow is sending more troops to South Ossetia and has allocated $US millions to help rebuild the region.
Military investigators have already started working in Tskhinvali to collect evidence of war crimes.
More than 1,600 civilians have died in South Ossetia during four days of violence, including 18 Russian peacekeepers, with 70 others were wounded.
Georgia claims 50 of its troops have been killed, and around 300 wounded.

Israel is to stop selling military equipment to Georgia after a complaint from Moscow. The arms ban includes sales of unmanned spy planes – several of which have been shot down over Abkhazia during recent tensions between Georgia and its breakaway republics.
The Ministry of Defence in Israel imposed the weapons embargo after ministers in Jerusalem received complaints from Russia. The ban prohibits the sale of Hermes 450 UAV spy drones, made by Elbit Maarahot Systems Ltd.
The decision to cut the trade is thought to be linked to growing tensions in the Caucasus and Russia’s reaction to flights of unmanned drones over the demilitarized zone between the Georgia and Abkhazia.
Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livny is reported to have reluctantly made the decision to cut arms supplies to Tbilisi after consultations with Russia.
Moscow reminded the Israeli government that it had refrained from selling certain kinds of weapons to states that could threaten Israel. Russia said it had every right to expect Jerusalem to reciprocate the goodwill.
With tension rising in Georgia’s breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Israel’s leadership has been facing a tricky choice between Russia and Georgia.
Russia’s barely hidden threat had the desired effect and Jerusalem opted for a ban on arms sales to Georgia.
Georgia has become a real goldmine for Israeli arms dealers, who will suffer because of the embargo.
Tbilisi had placed orders with several Israeli military manufacturers. Among the weaponry ordered were 70 million rifle cartridges, Merkava tanks, APCs, helicopters, UAVs, fire control systems and night-vision devices.

Another UN Security Council session on the situation in South Ossetia has wrapped up in New York. Russia says it's not refusing to start talks with Georgia but believes negotiations can only be possible when Georgia pulls out its troops from South Ossetia and commits itself to a non-use of force agreement.
Georgia has called for humanitarian and diplomatic intervention from the UN Security Council members “to stop aggression coming from Russia.”
“Russian ground troops’ armed invasion has already transformed into a full-scale occupation of parts of Georgian territory. The process of extermination of Georgian population and annihilation of Georgia’s statehood is in full swing,” said Irakly Alasania, Georgian ambassador to UN.
Georgia and the U.S. have also said that what Russia is looking for is a regime change.
But Russia has reiterated that a regime change is actually American terminology.
It has also reminded the UN Security Council that Russia was the first to initiate the urgent meeting on the conflict in South Ossetia back on Thursday.
Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said that whatever the policy of the U.S. in this conflict may be, what it surely shouldn’t do is engaging propaganda at such a highly respected body as the UN Security Council.
He also said that Georgia is one of the fastest growing countries in terms of the increase of its military potential. Churkin said Georgia has increased its military budget by 30 times in the last several years.
According to Churkin’s data, 127 military advisors from the U.S. Department of Defense are now in Georgia, not taking into consideration all other advisors.
Russia’s ambassador to the UN said actions of the Georgian leadership have no legal terminology to describe them.
“What legal terms can be used to describe what has been done by the Georgian leadership? Can we use ethnic cleansing for example? When about one third of the population of South Ossetia left it during several days and went north risking their lives – is it ethnic cleansing or not? Now, when 2,000 is killed out of the total population of 100,000 – is it genocide or not? How many civilians must die before we describe it as genocide?” Churkin said.
